terms of use
Last updated 31 October 2026. In short: your photos stay yours, you let us show them on Find a Bench, only post what you took yourself, and check a bench before you rely on it.
who runs this site
Find a Bench (findabench.com) is a small community project.
using the site
- Browsing the map and bench pages is free and needs no account.
- To post benches or rate them you need an account. You must be at least 16, give a working email address and keep your password to yourself. You are responsible for what is posted from your account.
- You can delete your benches at any time from their pages.
your photos and text
You keep the copyright in the photos, descriptions and inscriptions you post. By posting them you give Find a Bench a free, non-exclusive, worldwide licence to store, resize and show them on findabench.com, in its sitemaps and machine-readable files (such as llms.txt), and in previews when someone shares a link to a bench. We don't sell your photos or license them to anyone else.
The licence ends when you delete the bench. Copies may remain for a short time in backups and in caches we don't control, such as search engines.
When you post, you confirm that:
- you took the photos yourself, or have the right to share them under the licence above;
- people are not recognisable in them unless they agreed to it (a passer-by far in the background is fine);
- the bench is publicly accessible, and the description and inscription are accurate as far as you know. Memorial plaques are personal to someone, so please copy them respectfully.
not allowed
- made-up benches, other people's photos, or photos taken from the internet;
- anything illegal, hateful or harassing, and other people's personal data (names, faces, car number plates) beyond what is on a public plaque;
- advertising, spam, or automated sign-ups and posting;
- trying to break, overload or scrape the site beyond normal use.
moderation
New benches, new photos and new inscriptions are checked by a moderator before they appear. We may reject or remove anything that breaks these terms, and suspend accounts that keep doing so. If you think something on the site infringes your rights, tell us and we will look at it promptly. If you have an account, you can delete your own benches at any time from their pages.
map data and safety
- Grey “unverified” benches come from © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License. They have not been checked by anyone here and may be gone or misplaced.
- Benches, paths and views change. Information on this site, including photographed benches, distances and backrest details, can be out of date. Check conditions yourself, and visit benches at your own risk.
liability
Find a Bench is offered free of charge and as it is, without a promise that it is always available or error-free. We are liable without limit for intent and gross negligence and for injury to life, body or health, and otherwise only as far as the law requires.
changes
We may update these terms, for example when the site gains features. The date at the top shows the current version; for significant changes we will tell account holders by email or on the site before they apply.
law
These terms are governed by the law of the country where the operator is established. This does not take away the protection you have under the consumer law of the country where you live.
